Intensive courses, otherwise known as crash courses, are a popular way of learning to drive. Our courses in Birmingham are tailor made to suit your needs and timetable and can be booked all in 1 week or you can spread them out over 2 to 6 weeks depending on your needs and experience. We find the best way of learning is to do around 20 hours in one week and then spread the rest of your course over the following 2 or 3 weeks leading up to your test. 1 week courses are only suitable for people with previous experience. If you are a new driver, rushing all your lessons into 5 days will not give you time to learn properly and will almost certainly result in a failed test. Please remember, the earlier you book your course the better as it's not easy to book driving tests anything less than a month away. Here are some ideas for courses if you're unsure how many hours to take
40 hours for £702. For total beginners with no experience at all or nervous pupils
30 hours for £522. For beginners with a little experience or quick learners 20 hours for £342. For those who have some experience but aren't test ready 10 hours for £180. For those with plenty of experience who want to polish up These prices include 1 hour free eg. 20 hours for £342 includes 19 paid hours and one free. Test fees are not included. 10 hour course does not include a free lesson.
10 Good reasons to do a crash course in Birmingham with us 1) We don't use trainee instructors - Anyone can teach as an instructor for 6 months without being qualified on a trainee licence and due to the credit crunch there are now more trainee instructors than ever. Have you noticed how many driving schools say things on their websites like "We are the fastest growing driving school in the area"? That's because they have no standards and take on anyone to teach, qualified or not. The school doesn't care how bad they are so long as the trainee pays them up to £400 a week out their wages. Over 70% of trainees fail exams meaning they should never have been teaching in the first place.
There are just two of us working together here at 1stdrive because we believe in quality, not quantity. We are both fully qualified with years of experience and hundreds of passes. We have also gone on to pass further tests with senior examiners from the Driving Standards Agency sitting in on some of our lessons and confirming our quality. We have sat in the car on many pupils driving tests (we will never do this unless you ask us to) and have gained knowledge of how tests are marked and conducted. We have nothing against trainees themselves, it's the way all this is hidden and kept quiet that we don't like. We believe if you learn with a trainee you should be told up front, if the school isn't being honest about that then what else might they be hiding? For your own safety, always ask to see your instructors badge as shown below.
2) No misleading intro offers - Lots of schools do silly offers like 5 lessons for £50 or 2 for £8.99 but there's no point in having a few cheap lessons if the price then shoots up. After the intro offer is over you'll be paying £21+ per hour where as with us the low prices last forever. We'd rather be honest with you and tell you the real price from the start, we don't hide a high price behind a few cheap lessons. Here's an example of how cheap lessons cost more if you took 40 hours to learn.
With others - 5 hours for £56 then 33 hours at £21 then £50 for 2 hours on test day = £799 With us - 1 hour free then 39 hours at £18 per hour flat rate = £702 It's often not the first 5 hours you get cheap but the 1st, 10th, 15th,16th and 17th or similar so you're forced into having a lot of lessons before you get the cheap ones. If you don't get as far as these lessons then you lose the money you have paid for them. Another common trick is that you get hit with a £50 or £100 "test fee" on the day of the test, that's how they make back the money. With us your first lesson is free and that's it. After this you just pay the same hourly rate forever and there will never be any price rises or hidden extras.
3) No stupid false promises -We don't make stupid claims like a guaranteed pass or pass in a week. There is always a waiting time for tests in Birmingham of between 4 to 8 weeks so it's just not possible to start next Monday and pass on Friday as schools claim. Be careful of anyone claiming they can get you a quick test and ask for proof. Even if you could get a test a week away, would you feel safe driving on your own after one week of rushed lessons? We are just honest - you may pass, you may not. What we guarantee is that we'll do our best to teach you and if you follow what we say you will pass like the hundreds of others that have come to us. 4) All our tests are done locally at the test centre nearest to you. Notice how many schools promise a test within days but they don't say where it will be. We've had pupils come to us from other schools who have been asked to pay for a train or flight to Scotland or Blackpool and take the test in a car they've never even driven before! This is because it's easy to get tests a day or two away in these areas. 5) No car sharing - It's always just you and your instructor in the car, on many courses you'll have two other learners in the back of the car. Schools try to make this system sound a good idea by giving it nice names like buddy driving or co-pilot learning and then making up some figures from psychological research showing how it will help you pass. All it really means is that you pay for the time you spend sitting in the back of the car, even though you aren't driving! This is why some courses appear to be so cheap, 30 hours for £400 including tests and hotels etc. It's a great way of instructors making money (3 pupils x £400 = £1200 a week) but it's not a great way of learning to drive. 6) We let you try a few lessons first to see if you like us before committing to an intensive course. Although we do need payment to secure a booking, we don't just expect you to send hundreds of pounds to someone you've never met. Come and meet us, talk to us and then make a decision. 7) No hidden charges - With offers such as a free 2nd test if you fail the first, they don't mention that you must pay for 10 hours of extra lessons first. You pay £200 for a "free" test that would have only cost you around £65. These offers get caught up in their own illogic. If you were ready for a test then why do you need to pay for 10 more hours and if you weren't ready and needed more lessons then why did they take you for a test in the first place? Other hidden charges can be admin fees for booking tests, theory test charges when you've already passed it or a test fee where you have to pay £50 instead of your normal lesson cost. What a rip off, you're paying more for your instructor to sit in the waiting room at the test centre drinking tea! 8) No price rises after the course. If you are unfortunate enough to not pass then any extra lessons you may need after the course are charged at the normal rate that you paid on the course, not a higher rate. 9) We return you home for proper rests of at least 1 hour between lessons. Many learners don't realise how tiring and stressful driving can be and it's horrible when you're forced into driving for 6 hours in a row or only have a quick 15 minute break between 2 hour lessons. Long driving hours are dangerous and it's often done just so the instructors can fit in more hours to make more money, at the expense of safety. 10) You won't lose any hours left over at the end of the course if you haven't used them all. When you pass we return any left over hours without deducting any admin fees etc so you won't lose any money.
