Driving test for key workers

Driving test for key workers

Driving test for key workers are now available through a new DVSA booking system.

Until April 24th 2020 the only way to book a driving test if you are a key worker was to email the DVSA. This was a temporary system and it was taking weeks for them to reply to each test candidate.

The new system is more streamlined and more similar to the usual booking system. I go over the details in the video below.

If you are a key worker book your emergency practical driving test here.

Driving test for key workers

Driving tests are now being booked as early as June 2020 but you will need to be able to prove you’re a key worker before your test is confirmed.

A key worker is someone who works in the following areas:

  • health and social care
  • education and childcare
  • key public services
  • local and national government
  • food and other necessary goods
  • public safety and national security
  • transport
  • utilities, communication and financial services

That is quite a wide range of areas so you’ll need to check with the DVSA if you’re not sure whether or not you qualify for an emergency driving test.

Finding a driving test is one thing but can you take driving lessons during the lockdown?

Can you do driving lessons in lockdown status?

Yes you can do driving lessons in lockdown status but only if you’re a key worker who’s work is essential to the COVID-19 respsonse.

You must not go out practising with parents or friends just because you want a driving lesson.

Professional driving instructors are being advised to ensure pupils bring documentation with them on driving lessons to prove they are a key worker in case we are stopped by police.

Be aware that police can and will stop and fine you if you are doing a driving lesson at the moment without very good reason.
