Latest news – April 30th 2020

Your driving test will be stopped if you get a serious fault or 16 drivers faults (minors) and you will be asked to drive back to the test centre. This is to limit the amount of time you spend in the car with the examiner due to social distancing.

When will driving test centres open?

Driving test centres are actually open at the moment.

A team of 400 driving test examiners have volunteered to do driving tests for key workers.

If you are a key worker then head over to that page for full details on how to book a driving test and how to take lessons during this time.

For everyone else it’s less uncertain when you’ll be able to take a driving test.

All instructors are hoping that test centres will open again by June at the latest.

What will happen when the centres open?

There will be huge demand for driving tests so expect a long wait for one.

There are currently 3 tiers of people booking driving tests. They are being allocated driving tests in order of priory as follows:

  • Key workers
  • People that already had a test booked which was cancelled due to COVID-19
  • People that want to book a driving test

There is going to huge demand for driving tests due to the backlog of people waiting for them.

Nobody has been taking driving lessons during this time which means there will be a flood of new learner drivers all wanting to book driving lessons.

In 2019 the waiting time for driving tests came down to as little as 3 weeks. It was common for it to be up to 5 months as recently as 2018 so it’s possible we may see a return to similar waiting times.

Nobody knows for sure but I am updating the details on here regularly as soon as information becomes available.
