Driving anxiety comes from your mind stopping you from driving because it thinks that’s the best thing for you.
I’ve worked with hundreds of anxious drivers and heard all kinds of reasons as to why their mind was giving them a fear of driving. When you first start hearing these stories they can sound odd and make no sense at all – that’s the point!
Think about it: if fixing driving anxiety was as simple as thinking back to when you had a car crash then you’d be able to fix the problem easily.
It doesn’t work like that and this is where many people, sufferers and therapists alike, make the classic mistake.

The classic mistake to avoid
Driving anxiety has nothing to do with driving.
Driving is just the symptom, the way that the real problem shows itself to you. The more you go looking for a driving-related memory of a crash or a time you had something bad happen when driving, the further you’ll be from fixing driving anxiety.
I can’t tell you how many times I bang my head against a wall every time I see an “expert” on YouTube telling people to just relax, play soft music or push through.
That is never to work because you’re working on the wrong thing!
Think of it like if you had a puddle of water keep appearing on the floor of your house. It’s no good just keep mopping it up, you need to find the source of the problem; the leaking pipe.
It’s your subconscious mind that stops you from driving
All problems in your life come from your subconscious mind. Well, maybe not a leaking pipe but you know what I mean.
Imagine this like using a phone and trying to load an app.
You tap on the app but it won’t load. You tap it again and nothing happens. What’s going on here is that the code in the background is broken so it just won’t load. You can tap it all you like and the app icon will look fine but it just won’t work. You have to uninstall the app, reinstall it and then it’ll work.
That’s a lot like fixing someone with driving anxiety. It’s pointless to just keep going out driving over and over, hoping that something will change. It won’t.
